Where we work

Marketing trades businesses on Prince Edward Island

PEI is Canada's smallest provincial market, where nearly every job is a referral in disguise. Marketing here is about being easy to find, easy to check and impossible to forget.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest provincial market, and it behaves like one: nearly every customer can ask a neighbour about you, and most do. That makes reputation the core of trades marketing on the Island. The other big factor in 2026 is change: several efficiencyPEI programs that drove heat pump demand have closed, so trades that relied on them need a new message.

PEI's trades markets

Charlottetown and Summerside are the Island's two centres, with Stratford and Cornwall sitting close enough to the capital to share its market.

  • Charlottetown, Stratford and Cornwall form the main market around the capital.
  • Summerside is the second centre, serving the western half of the Island.
  • Three Rivers and rural PEI cover wide areas with fewer competitors, where response time and reliability carry the most weight.

In a market this size, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how you handle the occasional complaint are seen by a large share of your potential customers. It pays to treat each of them as a permanent public record.

Climate and seasonality

Island winters bring plenty of snow and cold, softened somewhat by the Gulf of St. Lawrence all around.

  • Heating trades have a long season, with heat pumps now central to the market.
  • Roofing, siding and eavestrough trades see winter weather damage and spring repair demand.
  • Exterior and landscaping trades book their season in late winter and early spring.

On the Island, heat pumps lead: Statistics Canada shows them as the main heating system in 36% of homes in 2023, ahead of oil at 28%, electricity at 18% and wood at 8%. That is a high share of heat pump homes, which means a large servicing and replacement market for HVAC contractors and electricians.

Regulators and certification to know

We summarise and link only. A note for mechanical contractors: with the licence cycle ending in 2027, check that the licence number on your website and profile stays current after renewal.

Energy programs, as of October 2026

PEI's program picture changed sharply in 2026:

  • The efficiencyPEI Free Heat Pump Program and OHPA delivery: the official efficiencyPEI page states applications are closed.
  • Residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 2026-04-15. A customer who bought between 2025-04-15 and 2026-04-15 may still have up to a year from the purchase date to apply.
  • The Free Insulation Program is being expanded with about $15 million under the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, announced 2026-06-29, for 1,800+ income-qualified homeowners; current intake details were not confirmed.

For HVAC contractors whose websites still advertise closed rebates, this is urgent: update or remove those pages. For insulation contractors, the expanded insulation program may be a reason to explain the process clearly on your site, with a link to the province.

Islanders who missed the closed rebates will ask what comes next. The honest answer, as of October 2026, is the federal National Heat Pump Rebate Program announced on 2026-10-08: up to $10,000 for below-median-income households and $2,000 for other eligible homeowners on eligible cold-climate air-source heat pumps, launching in 2027 according to federal pages. It is not open yet, so describe it as coming and link to the announcement. That kind of plain, dated update is exactly what keeps a small-market reputation intact.

How we approach marketing trades on PEI

  1. Treat reviews and replies as the main channel.
  2. Clean up outdated rebate claims on websites, profiles and ads.
  3. Shift HVAC messaging from rebates to servicing, reliability and replacement planning for the large number of existing heat pumps.
  4. Use short ad bursts only when there's a clear reason.

Frequently asked questions

Does a PEI trades business need paid advertising at all?

Often only a little. In a market this small, a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews and a clear website do most of the work. Short, targeted ad bursts can help during peak weeks or when launching a new service.

Are efficiencyPEI heat pump rebates still available?

As of October 2026, the residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 2026-04-15, and the Free Heat Pump Program page states applications are closed. Purchases made between 2025-04-15 and 2026-04-15 may still apply within one year of purchase. Check the PEI government page before mentioning any program.

Which licences should a PEI plumbing or mechanical company show?

Plumbing companies need a PEI Plumbing Contractor's Licence, and boiler and pressure vessel work requires a Mechanical Contractor Licence. Showing these on your website and Google profile helps customers check you. Confirm requirements with PEI Inspection Services.
