Marketing trades businesses in British Columbia

BC is really four trades markets: the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Okanagan and Interior, and the North. Each needs its own geography, season and message.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

British Columbia is where Trades.Marketing is based, and it's a province where one marketing plan rarely fits the whole map. The Lower Mainland is dense and fiercely competitive, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan behave like regional markets with strong word of mouth, and the North needs wide service areas and patient follow-up. A BC trades business does best when its marketing matches the part of the province it actually serves.

Four markets in one province

Look at where BC's biggest municipalities sit, from Vancouver, Surrey and Burnaby out to Abbotsford, and you can see where most trades competition is: the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Kelowna and Saanich are the large exceptions.

  • Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Many companies chase the same searches, and clicks are expensive. Winning here means narrow geography (the neighbourhoods and suburbs you can reach quickly), a page for every job type, and reviews that are more recent than your competitors'.
  • Vancouver Island. Saanich and the Greater Victoria area behave like a close-knit regional market. Reputation and repeat customers matter more than raw ad spend.
  • Okanagan and Interior. Kelowna and the surrounding communities have a colder winter and a different season from the coast, so campaigns copied from Vancouver tend to run at the wrong time of year.
  • The North. Long drives, smaller towns and fewer competitors. A strong Google Business Profile and clear service-area pages often matter more than paid search.

Results from our HVAC work fit this pattern: GasBoilers.ca, a gas-boiler division built for CANRO Heat, serves 26+ BC communities, and BCWide.ca reached 3× leads in 90 days.

Climate and seasonality

Weather in BC depends on which side of the mountains you work. Vancouver and Victoria crews deal with rain more than cold, while Interior and northern crews face a far longer, harder heating season.

For marketing, that means:

  • Coastal roofers, eavestrough, drainage and waterproofing trades see demand build with the autumn rains. Campaigns should start before the first heavy storms, not after.
  • Coastal landscapers, fencing and deck builders can often keep working later into the year than crews in colder regions, but spring is still when most homeowners decide.
  • Interior and northern HVAC, plumbing and electrical trades need their emergency and heating campaigns ready for a much sharper winter.

Our seasonal marketing calendar sets this out month by month.

Regulators and certification to know

These are the bodies BC customers may check. We link and summarise only; confirm your obligations with each one.

  • Technical Safety BC covers electrical; natural gas, propane and hydrogen; boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration; and other technical systems. Ten local governments issue some electrical or gas permits, but Technical Safety BC still licenses contractors.
  • SkilledTradesBC runs Skilled Trades Certification. Seven electrical and mechanical trades are already covered, among them construction electricians, gasfitters (A and B), sheet metal workers, steamfitters and pipefitters, and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics; mobile and tower crane operators join on 2027-07-05.
  • BC Housing Licensing & Consumer Services handles residential builder licensing and home warranty matters, which matters to renovators and builders.
  • WorkSafeBC for workplace safety and insurance, and Consumer Protection BC for consumer matters.

For marketing, certification and licensing are trust signals. A clear licence number and certification on your website and Google profile helps customers choose you over an unlicensed competitor.

Energy programs that drive demand, as of October 2026

Energy programs create waves of demand for HVAC contractors, electricians, insulation installers and window and door companies. In BC, as of October 2026:

  • The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program gives income-qualified households rebates on heat pumps, heat pump water heaters and building-envelope work. Invoices dated 2026-07-06 or later face new rules: some rebates are gone and fewer homes qualify.
  • The Home Renovation Rebate Program is listed for households that are not income-qualified; current amounts were not confirmed when we checked.
  • The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program is delivered in BC through BC Hydro and FortisBC under an agreement announced on 2026-06-29.

BC is split between fuels: Statistics Canada found that 42% of households relied mainly on natural gas for heat in 2023 and 36% on electricity. Programs change often: confirm details with the administrator before you mention any of them in an ad.

How we approach marketing trades in BC

  1. Draw the map first. We set your service area by drive time, not municipal boundaries, especially across bridges and tunnels in the Lower Mainland.
  2. Write for the climate you serve. A Kelowna furnace page and a North Vancouver roof-leak page should not read the same.
  3. Show licences and certification on every relevant page.
  4. Pick the right channel per market. Paid search earns its keep in the Lower Mainland; reviews and local SEO often do more on the Island and in the North.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vancouver too competitive for a small trades business to advertise?

Not if you narrow the target. A tight service area, a specific high-value job and strong reviews let a small company compete with large ones on the searches that matter to it, instead of bidding on every 'plumber Vancouver' click.

Should a BC electrician or gas fitter show licence details on the website?

Generally, yes. Technical Safety BC licenses gas and electrical contractors, and showing your licence clearly lets customers check it. Confirm what you are permitted to display with Technical Safety BC.

Can I advertise CleanBC rebates in my ads?

You can mention that programs exist and link to them, but avoid quoting amounts or promising eligibility. The Energy Savings Program changed its requirements for invoices dated on or after 2026-07-06, and terms can change again.
